I believe that in these days of enormous political change and economic hardship, we lawyers can and should do more. We need to be in deeper conversations, and accept bigger challenges. Together, we have a huge opportunity to improve our lives and the lives of many others. As we accept this challenge and take action, we’ll create part of our own legacy.
I’m inviting you to join me in the creation of a community of lawyers who will gather several times, for several days, over several months. Each participant will learn to create a compelling vision of what’s next, enroll others, and take action. With the support of the community, each participant will achieve his or her goal. The goals will be relevant, compelling and clearly stated. They will be personal and professional, and will represent the best in us.
As we gather, we will form a learning community. We’ll study and apply diverse and well-established principles of leadership and personal development. We’ll listen wholeheartedly to each other, and support and challenge each other. We’ll work together as a team. Few of us have ever known teamwork of the kind I envision for us. It is the kind of teamwork that I’ve experienced at the Hudson Institute and the Strozzi Institute. It’s the kind of teamwork needed to achieve bold dreams. I know that from my personal experience.
We will gather from law firms, corporations, public agencies, pro-bono organizations, and the judiciary. We invite and welcome those who have retired from the practice of law, for they are the wise elders.
The formation and benefits of community take some time. We will gather three times in the fall and early winter of 2009 -2010. Each time, we will convene for dinner on Thursday evening and conclude Sunday morning, with lunch. For each conference, participants will only miss one day out of the office. And, participants will be home on Sunday, with time for family and friends. The dates are, as follow:
· Weekend of Thursday, October 29th - Sunday, November 1st, and
· Weekend of Thursday, January 14th - Sunday, January 17th, and
· Weekend of Thursday, March 4th - Sunday, March 7th.
Jennifer Van Homer and Robyn McCulloch will join me as faculty. Both are very able and inspiring teachers, and they’ve trained with me at the Hudson Institute and the Strozzi Institute. Between conferences, the participants will receive individual coaching, to help focus and sustain their efforts.
The cost of the coaching is included in the $5500 cost of the program. Scholarship assistance will be available. As in the past, we will make application for full CLE credit.
We will gather at the beautiful House of Prayer residence in Collegeville, about an hour Northwest of Minneapolis. It is an inviting and welcoming space. Within a few steps is a simple sanctuary, carpeted with in-floor heating. Here, we will start our days with yoga or meditation.
I hope that you will join us. You have a lot to offer the group. And you will learn a lot as a member of the group, including how to:
· State an important goal or goals in a clear and compelling way, and enroll others.
· Create a specific project and take action to deliver on it.
· Develop trusting relationships, and better coordinate with others.
· Partner as a member of a high-performing team.
· Be in practices that support being resilient and more effective.
· Step forward boldly and creatively, for your benefit and the benefit of many others, at a critical time in our history.
I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts about my 2009 – 2010 Lawyer Program. Better yet, I hope that you will join us. And, please, spread the word. As with all of my programs, people enroll because they have been encouraged by someone they know.
I look forward to hearing from you. In the meanwhile, enjoy these days of summer.
