Around the World in 65 Days
Writing an updated newsletter has been on my to-do list longer than I can remember. I keep thinking that there will be some breathing room, that I will be able to write after x event or y flight.
As most of my readers know, I am a nomad. I do not have a permanent home and travel around the world. Some of you know what that really looks like: I show up and gather the tribe. That includes people I know and people I don't. I get on social media and find people neither of us knows. I go looking for the conscious, innovative, systems-thinking lawyers, who live their lives according to their values. In addition to scheduled events, I spend a lot of time in one-on-one or small group gatherings.
The gatherings are always inspirational. Integrative lawyers are brilliant and interesting. Conversations are full of possibility and love. We have fun.
Of course, I continue my regular work along the way. I've written articles, like this one, and this, and this. I've signed a bunch of books. The ABA is publishing an interview of me on April 25, going out to 240,000 email subscribers. Each upcoming event must be planned in advance so I am often planning the next event.
I'm writing now from the San Francisco Bay Area. I'll be here until the end of the month, on a (real live!) vacation for the week after that, then I will have some stationary time. I hope to catch my breath and do a more thorough update then, but we know how good intentions sometimes fail.
Here are some highlights of the last couple of months:
March 2, Miami, Florida, USA
-
I spoke at special legal change track of the Ashoka U Exchange. Ashoka U works with colleges and universities to foster a campus-wide culture of social innovation.
- Is Law the Manifestation of Spirit for the Common Good?
That was the title of my talk at the Program in the Study of Spirituality at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. They are a self-funded initiative in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs that explores “Spirituality” in a variety of traditional and contemporary contexts. Their mission is to lead the cultivation of new consciousness through diverse, heart-centered, and spiritually responsible educational programs and dialogues, inspiring the global community to create a just, peaceful, and prosperous world.
March 7: United Kingdom
- In London, I was interviewed by Open University for a course on Integrative Law.
- I also spent time with Elaine Quinn, publisher of The Conscious Lawyer Magazine in Oxford.
March 9-15: The Netherlands
- Searching for Teal: A gathering at Buurtzorg. A group of lawyers, representing six countries, came together to explore the ideas of Reinventing Organizations and to explore the concept of Teal Lawyers. We'll be saying more about that as things unfold.
- I met with a lawyer from Suriname who is interested in bringing integrative law to his country.
- I met with a group planning an integrative law conference in Amsterdam in October.
March 16-18: Spain
- I met with the plucky Basques who are planning to transform law in Spain. We redesigned Conscious Contracts to include concepts of Design Thinking.
March 18 - April 16: Australia
- I led a course on Ethics and Values
- I went to Sydney for The Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration Second International Conference on Non-Adversarial Justice: Integrating Theory and Practice.
- I led a Lawyers as Changemakers workshop in Melbourne, resulting in the creation of 17 projects in the community.
April 16-18: Hawaii, USA
- A Lawyers as Changemakers presentation and conversation at the King David Kalakaua Building.
April 18-May 1: San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA
- Conference Presentation and Book Signing at ABA ADR Section Annual Meeting.
- Marin County Gathering
- East Bay Gatherings
Some big changes are coming down the pike over the next few months. I'll be back in touch!
Love,
Kim
