Sharif Abdullah
America's Collective Shadow: Race, Poverty and Religion
Commonway Tele-Seminar on 17 & 18 November, 2009 6-8 pm Pacific time
Many of us have done our own personal “shadow” work: courageously looking into those places where we do not live up to our own potential, when we fail our own standards.
Now, it’s time to take the next step: to look at our communities and our nation. This is not to DWELL on our past, but to RELEASE ourselves from its grip.
Sharif Abdullah Blog: Someone Wants You Afraid, I Want You Empowered
From the Commonway.org Newsletter:
BLOG Excerpt:
In so many of our current national debates, there is fear-mongering ON ALL SIDES. People shouting and screaming about “death panels” in the health debate. Other people afraid of gun-toting men in para-miltary uniforms attending the debates.
This is the “Agenda of Fear”, in full bloom. Somewhere out there, somebody wants YOU to be afraid. Fearful people are easily manipulated and controlled. On the Left as well as the Right.

Matthew Fox and Sharif Abdullah Talk
Matthew Fox & Sharif Abdullah: An Informal Dialog
Noted theologian, prolific writer Matthew Fox sat down with his friend, Sharif Abdullah, in Portland while Fox was there for a fund-raiser for The Earth & Spirit Council's "The Natural Way: Indigenous Voices" series.
They engaged in a lively and thought-provoking informal evening dialog – in which a group of Commonway members were invited to participate. The video is just over 2 hours and is available at:
Video Podcast: Sharif Abdullah Part 1
In Part 1, Sharif talks about growing up in public housing, on welfare, in Camden, New Jersey and his early sense that human beings were not meant to live that way, that there had to be a better way.
He talks about his work in Commonway Institute and his study of the three aspects of Power and how our lives are inextricably linked on the planet.
Sharif Abdullah: Part 5
In Part 5, Sharif talks more about Sarvodaya and the awakening of society and the inner being that causes one to live a life of compassion and service. The organization, Sarvodaya, works in Sri Lanka, a country torn by civil war.
Sarvodaya focuses on meeting the ten basic needs of society with an open heart. Sharif works with Sarvodaya and Sri Lanka as a laboratory for his work.
Sharif Abdullah: Part 4
In Part 4, Sharif talks about spiritual starvation, the knowing that this is not the life you were meant to have, this isn't the thing you were born to do. Spiritual starvation cannot be satisfied with more stuff or drugs. Sharif talks about his own struggles with spiritual starvation and overcoming the challenge of living a fulfilling life.
He also tells of his introduction to Sarvodaya (a concept created by Gandhi) and his first meeting with Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne of Sri Lanka.
Sharif Abdullah: Part 3
In Part 3, Sharif talks about some of his thinking about the technological and social transformations required for creating a world that works for all.
Understanding how important it is to make the changes requires a new inquiry about satisfaction and fulfillment. Among the ideas he discusses is Vicki Robin's concept of Enoughness and Voluntary Simplicity.
Sharif Abdullah: Part 2
In Part 2, Sharif begins by talking about the challenge of creating and funding an organization that wishes to create such wide systemic change.
His work is about the transformation of society at a planetary level, a radical shift in priorities to save the planet.
How do we do that? What are our first steps? How can we catalyze a new direction for humanity?
